Zeum celebrates a beautiful holiday tradition of the Philippines with a display of colorful parols created by local youth with parol master artist Robert David. The Zeum Conewalk Gallery will be all lit up with the traditional star-shaped lanterns as part of the Parol Lantern Festival. Kicking off Zeum’s “2-D to 3-D” series, animator Doug Rhodes will share the magic of taking still images to create exciting animations that you can “fly into”—a popular technique used in movies like Spiderman. All Shook Up: The SF Earthquake in 3-D with David Burkhart

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, author David Burkhart will demonstrate the wonders of using 3-D photography, or “stereoscopy”, to rediscover the historic quake, using examples from his book, Earthquake Days, The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire in 3-D. Teacher Open Studio

Zeum invites teachers for a FREE day to get to know Zeum and its neighbors. Visitors will enjoy a light breakfast, get an overview of Zeum’s programs, participate in a hands-on clay animation workshop, and meet education departments from surrounding neighborhood museums. The visit will include complimentary admission to Zeum, and a take-home gift. An optional walking tour of the museums in Yerba Buena Gardens will also be offered at noon. Little Zs: Workshops for Preschool Children

The Little Zs program celebrates each child’s individuality while helping to develop creativity, self-esteem, language, problem solving skills and motor skills. Using a wide range of age appropriate books, creative materials, and hands-on art experiences we foster each child’s development in a fun, and friendly environment. Parents provide support for their child and receive professional tips on how to encourage creativity.
During the month of January, Little Zs explore the winter season, designing puzzles to play with on rainy days, painting with ice, and constructing winter mobiles. A special workshop on the 27th will commemorate Chinese New Year.

Black History Month: Commemorative Art from San Francisco Youth

Zeum Conewalk Gallery
Zeum presents a juried art show of inspiring work created by San Francisco youth in honor of Black History Month. The common theme of personal freedom unites this diverse collection of drawings, collage, masks, and prints created by middle and high school students. Zeum is proud to join these young artists of all backgrounds in celebrating the strength, vision and determination of African-Americans, and the rich history of Bay Area communities. The artists of the top three submissions will receive cash prizes and will have their work displayed at the de Young museum in May, as part of the San Francisco Youth Arts Festival.

Howtoons: Creative Inventions with Saul Griffith

Zeum presents a special event with Saul Griffith, a founder of Squid Labs and co-creator of Howtoons—cartoons that show kids of all ages "How To" build things while encouraging children to discover the world through fun, creative, and inventive play. Howtoons will be published by Harper Collins in April 2006. Griffith will share his brand new ideas for future volumes of his series, and all participants can be a part of a Howtoons documentary that is in the works. Conversation Hearts: Audio Valentines with Anne Perez

Toy developer Lily Anne Perez will show visitors how to make sweet audio valentines with some simple electronics they will assemble themselves. The “conversation hearts” will layer participants’ voices and music in a unique gift for someone special. This workshop is made possible in part by a donation by audio chip manufacturer Kodec. Toy Tunes: Playing with Music by Amar Chaudhary

Workshop participants create music from broken toys or by drawing squiggly lines with electronic musician Amar Chaudhary, a composer and sound engineer who plays—and plays with—his instruments. Chaudhary has had his music performed internationally, received several honors for his musical work, and has developed software for music composition and performance. Limited space available. Youth Film Project: Stories of Migration and Displacement

Inspired by the stories of Gulf Coast residents who were transplanted to far-flung reaches of the country, a group of Bay Area teens is documenting the stories of people on the move. In this special afternoon for families, the young filmmakers set up shop at Zeum to capture local family stories of migration and displacement. Presented in partnership with SF Noir, The Museum of African Diaspora, and The Bay Area Youth Fund. This workshop is made possible in part by a donation from Pure Digital, Inc.

Presented at Zeum in partnership with Consulate General of Mexico, this special exhibit was designed for blind children, and features 22 pieces of sculptural and tactile art from Mexico. The exhibit also includes Braille signage in English and Spanish. Visitors are invited to discover a new way of seeing as they experience the artwork through touch.

Similar to a behind-the-scenes tour of professional production studios, Reality Check introduces visitors to the process of creating a show—be it a live performance, radio story, movie, or television show—from start to finish. The exhibit provides access to tools that allow youth to create their own media about topics that are most relevant to them, and inspires visitors to share their unique perspectives on the world.
Animators Studio

In the Animators Studio, visitors of all ages explore character development, storytelling and movement using video and digital technology. Kids and families work together to create clay characters, and then bring their stories to life using video cameras and stop motion animation. When the process is complete, visitors can take their animated movies home with them on a CD-ROM.
Digital Workshop
Ongoing
This high-tech classroom is equipped with computers and digital equipment that visitors use to experiment with illustration, video editing, animation, 3-D modeling, multimedia presentations, web page design, and more. Visitors of all ages can arrange a sound composition, or manipulate their own photograph to create digital art.
Production Lab

Visitors can produce and star in their own music video using karaoke equipment, video cameras, digital editing tools, costumes and their own star power.
