Zeum Kicks Off the New Year with A New Look
And An Exciting Lineup of Exhibits

San Francisco’s Popular Hands-On Children’s Museum to Unveil New Award Winning Identity at Launch Party, Wednesday, February 15, 6 – 8 p.m.

1 February 2006, San Francisco, CA; Zeum, San Francisco's hands-on arts and technology museum for kids and families, today launched its new award-winning brand identity developed by the celebrated creative agency Turner & Associates.

The new brand identity, which features the spirit and art from the children who visit the museum every day, is the result of a year-and-a-half-long collaboration between Zeum and San Francisco-based creative agency Turner & Associates. The design process included focus group sessions with kids and their parents to gather impressions of Zeum--a step which Creative Director, Stephen Turner, found particularly rewarding. "The visitors are very passionate about the mixture of technology and creativity they find at Zeum," says Turner. "Kids at every age level named different activities that they find inspiring. We tried to capture that enthusiasm and breadth in the work we developed for Zeum."

Zeum will host a launch party on February 15, from 6 - 8 p.m., to kick off the new brand identity and give a preview of the exhibits and programs on tap for 2006. The event will also feature free carousel rides to raise awareness of Zeum's "Every Animal Needs a Name" fundraising campaign and to celebrate the
100th anniversary of the city's famous carousel.

Since opening its doors in 1998, Zeum has established a solid reputation as a unique venue where kids and families can use arts and technology tools to create movies, music, and art, and more. Through its innovative programming, Zeum has reached over 1.5 million youth and families, including over 55,000 K-12 school children from 85% of SFUSD schools, 20% from fee-waived programs for low-income students

Over the past few years Zeum has gained significant momentum and has become an integral part of the San Francisco community. From 2001-2005 Zeum was the host site for the San Francisco Unified School District's Annual Youth Arts Festival. In 2003, Mayor Willie Brown declared Oct 18th "Zeum Day in San Francisco" in honor of the museum's 5th anniversary. In 2005, Zeum featured its first international exhibit, Our Home: Chinese & American Children's Art on the Environment , and later that year displayed Green Cities another exhibit of children's art from around the world as part of the United Nations' World Environment Day.

"Zeum has come a long way since 1998," says Zeum's CEO, Adrienne Pon. "We're the place where young people come to tell their stories and express themselves in a variety of creative ways that are relevant to their own experiences, cultures, and personal styles. Our new brand identity reflects an evolution to new levels of excellence in programs that are innovative, educational, inspiring, and fun."

2006 is shaping up to be another exciting year for Zeum with the 100 th anniversary of the Zeum carousel and the related "Every Animal Needs a Name" fundraising campaign, and upcoming international exhibits such as Paintbrush Diplomacy: The Universal Language of Art, (April 2006) a global exchange of artwork and letters from countries at war, present and past; and Planet Art (May 2006), an ongoing element from Zeum's involvement with World Environment Day which includes youth artwork and poetry aimed at fostering environmental awareness.

In May, Zeum will also launch a new exhibit in its Main Gallery that engages visitors in storytelling and character development. The exhibit will feature Animateering --a virtual puppet show developed by Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center. Visitors of all ages will be able to utilize high-tech tools to assemble 3-D characters, choose backdrops, incorporate sound effects and produce a story.

Throughout 2006, Zeum will also continue to offer exciting workshops that give visitors the opportunity to work alongside professionals from arts, media, and technology fields. On February 11 th , Zeum will host a special workshop with an animator from the feature film Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Additional workshops with filmmakers, artists, toy developers, sound engineers and other professionals will be offered throughout the year.
